As someone who cannot be associated as a child anymore (but I am a child at heart!) the first thing that came into my head when I played Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet was; ‘this is going to be too childish for me’, but shiver me timbers, it was actually quite comedic on an adult level. Nelly Cootalot is the perfect role model she-pirate for rebellious girls looking for an epic adventure.

To begin with, Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet is 100% story-based so there will be a lot of text and undoubtedly reading included. I for one am a book-worm so these type of video games appeal if you ask me a whole lot. The story brand is very amusing to get into, it’s about a young lady wanting to become a pirate over a quest to get the Treasure of the Seventh Sea and get together numerous personalities on the way, however the mysterious Baron Widebeard is planning something, is it possible to stop him? You will need to solve devious and challenging puzzles, hornswaggle (this implies cheat in pirate converse) your way to victory and be the best she-pirate the game has ever seen.

To be able to play Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet, you just need yourself and a keyboard or mouse. The controls are very simple, the game works on a click to move system so just click to interact with people and objects and you will start your adventure in no time. A really good feature of this game which I am very happy about, is EVERY CHARACTER has a voice actor so you basically don’t have to read yourself, someone is reading for you! And it’s not just any body, the legendary Tom Baker from Doctor Who and Little Britain and Thomas Reiner from Futurama and Raumpatrouille Orion have given their voices for the game. So now there is no excuse for anyone not to play this game. The voice acting is really well done, it is clear and is in sync with the text.

The sounds and music is nice in the game, it matches the scene and setting well and helps set the scene for this pirate-y adventure. Now let’s talk animation and art style. The game is very colourful and the characters are very well drawn with lots of detail. The different areas in the game have really life-like drawings of buildings, boats, mountains, oceans and is just really beautifully crafted. The animation is very smooth and when you click to move your character, it goes straight away with no hesitations.

When playing a game, achievements are the thing that I like to collect and get 100% (if possible) in. This game has a total of 20 achievements and some are very easy to unlock as they are either completing the story or progressing through the game. However, some achievements are a bit trickier, you may need to speak to a character that’s completely not related to the actual story or do something perfectly on your first try. The puzzles in the game can take a bit of brain power to decipher as I had trouble with a few things that took me a while to figure out. But if you read through and investigate your surroundings properly, then it should be a lot simpler as I do tend to read things once and then forget about it.

Overall, Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet is an amazing adventure game, with lovable characters, fun puzzles and is just a delightful point and click experience. This game is available to purchase from the Steam store and is one of the most enjoyable games I have played. So if you want to meet Nelly Cootalot and the other swash buckling characters then what are yarr’ waiting for?

Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet has lots of the makings of an effective series - quirky characters, superb humour, solid gameplay and an excellent art style - but it isn't quite buried treasure yet.
